About Us
About Us
Diversity, in respect to our blog, is the difference in mindsets and motivations, variations and beliefs, actions and practices in institutions that differ between groups.
- Through consented interviewing and observation, our goal is to search for variations in cultural values in how different groups of students (excluding faculty and staff) find reasons and motivations to attend the gym on the USF campus. By compiling our results, we aim to determine trends in both motivations and mindsets of active USF students.
- Once data is collected and analyzed, we hope to post the trends we have observed in active USF Students.
- Humanistic Approach: By finding diversity in trends, we can better understand the different mindsets of the students at USF who go to the gym.

Conclusions
When I started this blog, I though that there were more differences between civilians and military folks when it came time to go to the gym. Besides the obvious motivation that one has to stay on tip top shape to perform the mission and stay in, soldiers also have the desire to look good and be healthy. Perhaps our personal motivations don't really matter after all. As long as the workout gets done there is some benefit to us all.
One Last Post
After an entire semester of looking at, interviewing, and researching all things gym related, we've come to the end. My focus in this research has shifted into the marketing/branding/style aspect of gym culture on campus. All things aside, I find it fitting to post my last article on "all things cute" to wear at the gym. Heads up, ladies. This one goes out to you.
Inspiration
Every time time I see pics of disabled soldiers still working out I get embarrassed. Across the world, disabled soldiers still want to workout and be part of team sports. If this does not inspire someone to get of the couch, I don't know what will.
Military Fitness for Civilians
I thinks this pictures illustrates the difference between soldiers and civilians quite clearly. It's so funny that people will actually pay money to workout as a soldier.
Macdill Gym
An official pic of the base gym. I sure miss that place. Working out with your brothers and sisters in arms is wonderful. There's no race or culture involved just people working out in order to better fulfill the mission.
Jamming to Music at the Gym Helps Physiologically
As it turns out, listening to music at the gym doesn't only help with us keeping a rhythm and having fun at the gym, it actually makes us lean mean fitness machines because it actually re configures our body and mental state to use less energy to do more work! As it turns out from the study, listening to music gives a good base for the exercise by providing rhythm and and allowing the mind to focus on other things than the activity at hand. This would make sense because then the body would act on its own in repetition to continue the exercises without hindrances, which increases the work done with less energy physiologically. Even miners sang songs to get them by with a little more ease! So the next time you hit the gym, be sure to remember those headphones!
Fun Heart Healthy Facts.
LOVE yourself by eating right & exercising daily. After we only have one Heart and it's definitely a must to keep us Alive.
Its A Healthy Life No Matter Who YOU Are.
Going to the gym and working out is seriously never a bad option NO matter who YOU are. Why? Let's just start with the fact that going to the gym everyday can help you control your weight by expending 500 calories per day. Exercising daily strengthens your heart and allows it to pumps more efficiently with more strain. It also lowers your blood pressure. And can lower the risk of developing diabetes and certain types of cancers. I guess it's safe to say the gym is the place to be. Going to the gym everyday can help you sleep better which gives you more energy. I know us as college students it definitely wouldn't hurt to be able to get more sleep with all the late nighters we have. Can also be a great way to boost your social life as well as your confidence. Let's see how people from genders and race are benefiting from the gym at Usf through these videos.
From the videos I determined that most Men & Women main goal is for a healthier mindset and lifestyle. Most Men and Women differentiate in what equipments they chose to use depending their interest and sport hobbies. Whether it may be running track or lifting weights the gym is the place to be! And no better than the USF gym which is right around the corner!

Military Fitness Clothing
Did you know that the founders of Nike are Army Veterans! Yep Yep. Also, did you know Under Armour offers a lot of tactical gear? Maybe that is the reason I saw it all over the base shops. Also, both brands offer a 10% discount to all military members. Pretty neat, huh?
Military Fitness Clothing
For my first comparison I went to the gym at Macdill AFB to conduct some field observation regarding the preferred brand of service members. Not surprisingly, they were Ńike and Under Armour as well. All other major brands were used as well but not as much. Yet, the brands were visible only during individual training. Fitness training as a unit is done with military uniform so I could not tell the brand worn at those times.
Our Survey Results!!!
All the questions we've asked about the gym and the culture of those part of the gym community have been answered, and here is what we found! Some answers seem to fit the stereotypes of what we think about with regards to the people that attend the gym. However, other findings were surprising and allows us to ask more questions about what it's really like to live a life of fitness at a gym. For instance, what about the gym culture makes those that don't attend the gym, not go? This is the first step in a process of understanding not only the culture of the gym, but also the culture of those that don't attend the gym. This means, more research must be conducted! What do you all think about the survey and the results? Did it surprise you? Did it reinforce stereotypes that you've had all along? Let me know and gym-on!
