About Us

Diversity, in respect to our blog, is the difference in mindsets and motivations, variations and beliefs, actions and practices in institutions that differ between groups.

- Through consented interviewing and observation, our goal is to search for variations in cultural values in how different groups of students (excluding faculty and staff) find reasons and motivations to attend the gym on the USF campus. By compiling our results, we aim to determine trends in both motivations and mindsets of active USF students.

- Once data is collected and analyzed, we hope to post the trends we have observed in active USF Students.

- Humanistic Approach: By finding diversity in trends, we can better understand the different mindsets of the students at USF who go to the gym.

Going to the Gym Good for More than Just your Brain!

Reading this article definitely brought up an aspect about going to the gym that I hadn't even considered. Going to the gym results in better grades? Researchers at Purdue University seem to think so, and they have proof to back it up!

By tracking the number of visits to the campus gym, researchers were able to verify that students that went to the gym, on average, had a slightly higher GPA than those who didn't go to the gym.

The science and the reasoning behind it is actually fascinating!
Michael, in response to your post about "that guy"
I think Planet Fitness is a gym who is capitalizing on marketing their brand as being welcoming to everyone except "those guys".

This commercial is funny- and it gets the point across that average people just want to be able to work out without being intimidated by the extreme gym rats

No, you're not the only one thinking this...

For those of us who have ever been to the gym, salvation is here!  As it turns out, I'm not the only one who looks at people in the gym and critically judges them!

There is always "That Guy" who struts around the gym in a shirt three sizes too small and obnoxiously grunts when lifting. You almost have to laugh and its great comic relief while you're working out.

But wait, there's more! Check out this article to find five other typical gym stereotypes common in gyms!

I am interested in learning more about the gym culture on USF campus.
I personally do not use the gym, because I live in Orlando, and have a membership at Anytime Fitness. I drive to campus twice a week-attend my classes and go home.

This article is interesting because it is suggesting University gyms do not have ENOUGH fitness options in their gyms. They mention how the gym can be gorgeous and state of the art, but if the students don't know how to use the equipment, it can be intimidating.

This is an interesting perspective that shows why the culture is not entirely inclusive of ALL University students.
